Well, I was hoping to review Madden 2000, however, this game is just as cool! I enjoyed playing it. I enjoyed playing it with my kids. My kids enjoyed playing it with each other. Scott, my three-year-old, enjoyed playing it by himself.

Some of you may be familiar with Backyard Baseball, and from what I hear, the Backyard gang is back! You start out in the Clubhouse and pick your team.

Okay, I stacked my team with three NFL players, or at least, three NFL players as kids. The game comes with eight NFL players total. The players also come with their own trading cards.

I even got to create my own playerbrucew

And then you play the game. When I could get my kids away from the computer, I chose single player, which gave me mouse control over the entire game. Two-player mode is a little different—one player gets the mouse, while the other player gets the keyboard. For me the keyboard wasn't as efficient; I preferred the smooth and easy mouse to the arrow keys. This may be a personal preference.

Remember when you were a kid, and you played street football? That's the feeling I got with this game. It's five-on-five and is played in a variety of weather conditions, on many different fields. I was surprised there wasn't a playing field set on a street. After you choose your field and weather, Sunny Day and Chuck Downfield provide commentary of the game.

After the kickoff, I was on offense. You're provided with a simple playbook with 12 plays, however you can alternate those if you want.

You can even create your own! I was a bit taken aback that my created plays were not saved from one game to the next. Of course, the plays that I created didn't work all that well, so maybe that was for the best.

I did manage to score a touchdown.touchdown

And got a really nice end zone dance from Barry Sanders. I managed to find a way to lose the game, however. But that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it. Okay, so I'm ten years old again.

I recommend this game to anyone who has kids that are interested in football. My reservations aside, they'll have hours of enjoyment. Of course, you need to be careful if you have only one computer because you might not be able to use it again.

For everybody who can't score here is a good play. Make a custom play and then make it so your running back has a yellow arrow going out. Then every time you say hike he will not be covered.
Dylan Melton · February 5, 2001 - 01:01 EST #2
This is a really great game! As a football fan, I've always changed the names on my computer football games to my friends and made my own plays so this game gave me an oppurtunity to play with my 4 year old sister and teach her my ways! I WILL have hours of fun, and when I get home, that's the first thing I'm going to do, play the game!
Saul Leo Brodsky · March 17, 2001 - 01:01 EST #3
I want to buy Backyard Football because it sounds great!!
Joe Doe · March 24, 2001 - 01:01 EST #4
Backyard football is to SWEET!
anonymous · April 22, 2001 - 17:20 EST #5
Why does Backyard Football always load during every play?
Lilshnoz · April 26, 2001 - 10:56 EST #6
This game is tough in the beginning but after a little while I got use to it. I love the fact that you can create a player.
anonymous · May 28, 2001 - 00:22 EST #7
Backyard Football is an awesome game. And if you like it, I very much recommend Backyard Baseball 2001! It's just as good, if not better!
anonymous · July 17, 2001 - 17:03 EST #8
Backyard Football is so fun!
Andrew Lavan · August 3, 2001 - 10:00 EST #9
I think it's the best game ever.

Addiction, interest, strategy-what more could a game have?
Mom · August 29, 2001 - 11:27 EST #11
Why can't I find Backyard Football in any of our local (Keene, NH) Staples, KMart or KBToys stores?
Brian Jones · September 7, 2001 - 14:27 EST #12
Hello, I have started a Backyard Football league. The league currently has 12 members and is growing. If anybody has played Backyard Football on the internet, you know that it is very challenging. That is why I created a BYF league so that the best players can compete against each other. My coach name on JRSN is Kingkai. If you want to know more information about my league, just e-mail me at Check out my league website: Or, you can simply go to my club website: Thank you for reading, and I hope you will be able to play in my BYF league.
Allen Babak Majd · September 14, 2001 - 17:02 EST #13
I can't find how to do special kid right.
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · September 15, 2001 - 00:56 EST #14
Well, simply clicking on the ghost player when you're choosing up sides will allow you to create the kid any way you like. As you can see above, I made Bruce W an excellent receiver. Mike

If you like playing Backyard Football on the internet, and want to talk to others about it. Just go to this internet address.
Coach Abell · October 14, 2001 - 23:12 EST #16
I heard there was a new BYF game coming out. Is this true? When is it coming out? How can I get one?
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · October 14, 2001 - 23:28 EST #17
Well, a visit to the Humongous Entertainment website should get you all the info you need. Thanks for reading. Mike

I have beat the game, but I still play it every day. I love it!!!!!
anonymous · December 16, 2001 - 15:12 EST #19
I really like Backyard Football. I beat the game a lot of times. I just got Backyard Football 2002 which is now available.
anonymous · December 16, 2001 - 15:50 EST #20
I got Backyard Football 2002 and on the cover is Drew Bledsoe and a Greenbay guy on the side. I want to know if there's a different cover because I saw a bunch of different boxes on the internet.
Coach Barryforever · January 24, 2002 - 21:59 EST #21
Kingkai's league is a great way to get playheaters kicked out of the league. It is a true way to see if you are good and to improve your game. The JRSN rankings are false because there are ways to cheat yourself to a good rank. In the league, you won't get away with it. Email to join. Kingkai has also started a Backyard Baseball league.
anonymous · January 28, 2002 - 19:18 EST #22
Hello. I am able to play Backyard Football 2002 through a LAN connection. Does anybody know how someone can use their IP address to play on my server. If there is a way it can be done, please post it on the site. I really want to play you guys head to head.
Lennis Cloud · April 7, 2002 - 19:12 EST #23
Could someone please e-mail me to say how to join the Backyard squad?
Johnyboy Fitzgeraldo · June 15, 2002 - 21:18 EST #24 It's fun. No cheaters like in BYF.
Ed Wood · August 27, 2002 - 13:36 EST #25
Backyard sports games are really entertaining. The kid-based commentary is very enjoyable, but they get boring fast. I agree with Johnboy Fitzgeraldo. is really fun and doesn't get boring because your team can get better and better.
Stefan · October 18, 2002 - 18:20 EST #26
I have BYF 2002, but I don't know how to play it online. Someone please e-mail me back.
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · October 18, 2002 - 22:59 EST #27
Unfortunately, as of this writing, online play is still not available for the Mac side. So, your best bet is to use Virtual PC and use the Windoze™ platform. The install disk is cross platform :)

Thank you for continuing to read ATPM.
Tyler T. · January 20, 2003 - 16:29 EST #28
This is a great game to play.
Ashley McMeekin · July 3, 2003 - 16:21 EST #29
It's a cool game to play if you don't get messed up.
Chris Donohue · July 30, 2003 - 15:00 EST #30
It's a good game if you know how to play it. Also, you have to get used to the game to get better at it.
Matt · September 30, 2003 - 18:28 EST #31
I still have the old version of BYF and I have not found a way to play it on the internet with all the new versions coming out. I have tried going to but it only gives ads about selling it. How do I play online? I have also tried, but that site only has baseball and soccer. Those are fun, too, but I still can't find football online.
anonymous · October 27, 2003 - 12:25 EST #32
I hear you Matt. I used to play the original Backyard Football on the internet, as well. That was when it was very fun. I even used to run a league. (Do you have a brother named Michael and a cousin named Arthur?) Anyway, I also tried Smallball but, like you said, they do not have football.

I am not sure how you can play Backyard Football online.
Matt · November 9, 2003 - 17:03 EST #33
Thanks for the backup, guys. I don't know what's up with this site, but no one is responding!
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · November 9, 2003 - 21:41 EST #34
Matt - that is because 1) this review is several years old, 2) the game is even older, and 3) we actually haven't heard much from the author in quite a while. I think he's buried in other endeavors. I'm not sure any of the other staff know anything about the game.
anonymous · November 12, 2003 - 20:48 EST #35
Could someone tell me how to register?
TJ · November 28, 2003 - 19:20 EST #36
I think you need to send an e-mail to them because that's the only way they will tell you.
Stefan Ming · November 30, 2003 - 16:04 EST #37
There is no more online play. They took it down because of low usage. I don't ever remember there being low use when I was playing online. I think we should start a petition to get online play back. It was so fun. I want to start playing it again! Please e-mail me if you are interested.
Joey Fiore · December 20, 2003 - 14:35 EST #38
Online play needs to be brought back. It doesn't cost them much money, so why not just have it? Many people own that game and some bought it just to play head-to-head online. Please bring back online play.
Daddy Longlegs · December 30, 2003 - 16:16 EST #39
We've got the 2002 version and what I can't figure out is how does an 8-year old continually beat his father because it seems I can seldom outsmart my son?!!! Usually he uses the mouse but we've occasionally traded places and he still whips me as he is always recovering a fumble or intercepting one of my passes! Of course he always wants Pablo Sanchez on his team!! Is there anything in print to identify how to actually make an interception?... or which keys to press to throw to certain receivers... (using the mouse or keyboard)? I've kind of learned the hard way as there was no documentation with the CD to assist with these areas. Also... as an observation... it would be nice if you could choose lengths of quarters (1 min vs. 2 min)... and if you could have a rematch without having to go through the selection process of players each time... (if updates are possible for future editions). We both enjoy the game immensely... even if I haven't been victorious very often!
anonymous · January 7, 2004 - 14:44 EST #40
Very good.
Alyssa · January 9, 2004 - 18:28 EST #41
They need to make the game harder.
Matt · January 15, 2004 - 16:54 EST #42
I agree. BYF should be back online! Who is with me?
Colt · February 7, 2004 - 18:00 EST #43
This is a great game, even though I have not found a place where I can play it. I am open for help on finding a web site to do so.

Please post help on this site. Thank you.
Brendon · February 22, 2004 - 12:25 EST #44
At least I know what happened to online play, but how will we get it back?
Paul · February 29, 2004 - 14:30 EST #45
Humongous Entertainment sold the game to a new company who did away with internet play due to so-called low usage. Sounds bogus. There has to be a way to restart this. How much would it cost to run such a server?
anonymous · March 21, 2004 - 17:52 EST #46
this game is so cool, but backyard hockey is better
B.J. · April 30, 2004 - 01:22 EST #47
Hey guys I am a HUGE BACKYARD FOOTBALL FAN. I really miss the online play. It's too bad they had to take it down, it really made the game fun. Anyway on August 15, 2001 I decided to start a Backyard Football League. It went very well and was very fun and competitive. Sadly, the online play was taken offline and the league died off. I wish there was a way to revive the online play. Anyway here is the website to the BYF league.

My main Backyard Football name was Kingkai. And my alternate names were Conker251ataol and Waldo.
Stefan · October 10, 2004 - 17:40 EST #48
I really miss backyard football online. It was fun to sdhow your skills against other players from around the country. There must be a way to get it back, if your interested please email me.

Bryce · December 20, 2004 - 16:58 EST #50
Hey... well they came out with that patch for 2002... i just figured that out and it came with the option for internet play but I guess I was too late because they said that it was taken down.

I had the original one and my sn was FSUkid or somethin like that... top 25 player... but i rly loved the online play and i was disappointed that they got rid of it for 2002 too. :-/

backyard football was better when it was owned by "Humongous Entertainment"
Joshua King · February 21, 2006 - 12:10 EST #73
Ok guys, I'm 13, and I've loved backyard football. Here's the run down on things:
Backyard Soccer and Backyard Baseball came out. They were really awesome, espeially backyard soccer with it's world cup. Then backyard football came out with the add-ons of internet play, and creating a player, not to mention pro-players as kids. Humoungous Entertainment was bought out by Infogrames. Infograms made Backyard Soccer MLS, which was not as good as the original, they made Backyard Baseball 2001, maybe as good as the original, and they made backyard football 2002, definately worse than the original. These still had online play, however. Then, the huge company Atari bought Infograms! They remade the kids making them look totally different (ugghh) and took away online play. It's obvious backyard games were better when they were made separately just from Humoungous, and something needs to be done of it!
J K · February 21, 2006 - 12:51 EST #74
I definitely agree...
Backyard Football 2002 was downright cheesy, while the original had rivalries, trick plays, and all the rest (except for they NEVER call holding) LOL.
bridget dames · March 9, 2006 - 17:40 EST #75
backyard football is a fun and exiting game me and my brothers injoy playing it.

love, Bridget

Andrew Lewis · June 17, 2006 - 16:57 EST #77
This is my 1st time on this website, and my 100th time on BYF, and it's a good explination for someone who is a beginner! I'm interested in what everyone's teams are if they're:

1. playing a BFL season

2. in the Cereal Bowl

3. your favorite team and you ALWAYS choose it.

I used to be the Tampa Bay Buccs. I still like them, but now, Baseball, Soccer OR Football, I'm with the Mighty Rockets, now!
taylor · August 26, 2006 - 16:33 EST #78
on my season with the niners i just got my 375th win of my career
Jordan Shannon · August 27, 2006 - 18:40 EST #79
I usually dont go more than one season with a team on BFL
Andy O. · September 12, 2006 - 18:38 EST #80
Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre's my quarterback, Steve Young's my backup, Jerry Rice is my wide receiver and Barry Sanders is my running back (I have the original version from '98 for the Mac). I also have Jocinda Smith (center), Pablo Sanchez (wide receiver/defensive back) and Ricky Johnson (star kicker with a 100% field goal percentage) on my team. I know it's an easy game, but no wonder I won every game...

They went 14-0 and won the Cereal Bowl 45-6 against the Buccaneers. Favre threw for 3,750 yards and 60 touchdowns, and interestingly was second in the league in sacks with 30 behind Dimitri Petrovich's 36.
Andrew · September 26, 2006 - 19:52 EST #81
there should be cheats to make the game harder
Mike · November 16, 2006 - 13:27 EST #82
i use the team the bills.dante is my qb and linebacker, jerry rice in my defensive back and wide reciever, mikey thomas is also my linebacker, damitri is also my linebacker and kicker (my linebackers switch between games),barry sanders is my running back and saftey, pablo is my other defensive back and wide reciever, and i have my secret player as my defensive linemen
Thomas Rhett Bentley · December 15, 2006 - 17:56 EST #83
Because Atari has bought out Backyard Sports, there is no reason to be begging Humongous Sports to bring back JrSN and online play. If anything, start a petition and send it to Atari. If Atari is convinced enough people are interested, they will find it is well worth their time to bring online play back.
Joshua King · December 17, 2006 - 09:01 EST #84
Well stated, Thomas Bently. However, since Atari is such a big company, I don't know if they really care about backyard sports. It's too bad that atari bought infogrames and infogrames bought humoungous entertainment

Matt · November 9, 2007 - 18:16 EST #90
NOOOOOOO!!!! I was 13-0 on Backyard Football playing in my 7th season and I got upset by the 2-11 Fishes. I coulda sworn I had the game won. It was 24-12 goin into the 4th quarter. I was the Packers with Brett Favre as my QB, Barry Sanders as my Rb. Dimitri as my Center and Jerry Rice and Pablo at wide reciever. I had the diffuculty level set on hard, but the rest of the season wasnt to hard for me. Anyway, Brett threw and interception and they ran it back. Then they got the two points. That made it 24-20. I thought to myself, they just got lucky, until this happened... with 0:46 left they kicked it off and Pablo was returning it, then Kiesha hit him and he fumbled. A Fishes player picked the ball up and was spotted down at I think the 21 or something. I had forgotten they had a power up, and I used Ovalteen on defense. What do you know they used Sonic Boom and scored, but they didnt get the 2. It was 26-24 with 16 seconds left on the clock. I wasn't going to let myself lose to the worst team in my confrence. The first 3 plays I picked got me in Dimitri's field goal range, as the clock ticked down to 4 seconds. It was still first down but I didnt want to try to score a TD when I could win it with a field goal. Anyway, I was at the 26 yard line, which made it a 42 yarder. Earlier in the season against the Rams, Dimitri kicked a 64 yarder and made it. I thought if he made that he could make this. Anyway, it was a beautifual snap, hold and great blocking. I filled the Kick Meter up all the way as he kicked it. When I saw it in the air, it looked good, then it curved left, but still looked like it might go in. Wrong. It bounced of the goalpost. The 13-0 Packers lose to the 2-11 Fishes. It snapped my 98 game winning streak through 7 seasons. I had not had a loss ever in my carrer, not even in the playoffs. Now I am 98-1. Dang!!!
Bryan Redfoot · November 21, 2007 - 09:38 EST #91
This is by far one of the best games out there. Ive played it for a looong time. I played madden for 360 and i still rather play this (ncaa is tight tho). BUt i never had a chance ot play online.. I WIsh i had a code. The create-a-player is the best out of all backyard games. Very simplistic yet extremely creative. I dont know why they changed it in the new games. and i think the other football games are getting worse. I havent played a better backyard game yet. Oh and does anyone know the deal with the kid on the patriots named stuart sullivan? in the season play this kid is really annoying cuz he'll randomly run faster then the other kids with 5 stars in running (out of 5). I think the creaters of the game purposly did that. but ill out run him somtiumes haha.. Still this game is a 9.9/10 in my opinion
Matt · November 21, 2007 - 21:00 EST #92
Yes, we made stuart the fastest season player in the game. The 2nd fastest is Julie Dunkel and the 3rd is Pete. Im not supposed to tell you this but here's a cheat.
Pick the following team
The Amazing Pigskins- Green Helmets Black Uniforms
1. Lisa Crocket
2. Pete Wheeler
3. Kiesha Phillips
4. Billy Jean Blackwood
5. Ashley Webber
6. Sidney Webber
7. YOU MUST DO THIS OR IT WONT WORK!!! Create a player with his name being John. Put no hair and dont change the head or anything. ADD NO SKILLS TO HIM!!!!
When you get into the team screen, use John as your QB. It doesnt matter where you put the other players. Just make sure you got John at QB. Start the game and on your first offensive play run Sneaky QB. Then you will here the sound when you get a power up. You have just recieved an unlimited supply of offensive powerups for the whole game. If this doesn't work, I'm sorry. But when I did it it worked.
Jay · December 8, 2007 - 00:48 EST #93
This game is good. I need help playing online. I beat anyone 4 years... By the way Julue dunkel is not so fast. Sturat, Moonbean,etc.. Its not fair that your created player can kick as high as pj or chico or collen
Jorden Berendt · December 19, 2007 - 16:41 EST #94
That cheat doesnt work that Matt sent. I tried it exactly 3 times it doesnt work. But i like the game. i play it over madden 08 on 360 amazingly! he was probaly rite when he said it mite not work.
Jorden Berendt · December 19, 2007 - 16:45 EST #95
I cant believe i lost in the playoffs i had lost 2 gms in the reg season that was weird.
but i lost to the rockets bc they int it and ran back for a td! i was at ther 20, and i didnt see the time so when i hiked the clock ran down and i threw a screen to Jerry rice, he almost got a td but a super fast girl came and tackled me!

i am 17 years old and I LOVE backyard baseball and backyard football. I have fond memories of playing these games over the internet when I was younger. Whatever happened to Even though the online server is gone, maybe someone can figure out how to hack the game and play over a private connection? I am tired of beating the cpu 100-0 and need some real competition.
Michael L · January 1, 2009 - 16:12 EST #101
Alright guys, I am going to find out if I can code a private server for us to do this on. I don't think it's possible because the server connection is probably hard coded in .fbl files that I cannot edit.

I think it is definitely worth a try. If Atari tells us to take it down (which I doubt they will), then that's OK, but we NEED to get it out there that this game deserves online (as well as BYB 2001; loved that game)
slooty · January 4, 2009 - 23:06 EST #102
If that can be done it would be amazing. It's hard to believe that there's no hacker out there that can't get into that 1999 software and make it work. If anybody needs money to do this...and I mean really do it like it was before,,,with the nieghborhoods and different fields and weather conditions...I am willing to help. REACT TO ME!!!

Hi slooty,
I don't know if this would have neighborhoods, but I'm trying to get it so you can make Direct IP play (which would be quite different than the epic JRSN layout)...hope I can get this to work, because it could be so much fun reliving the days of COMPETITIVE BYF.

Playing vs. the Computer is just too easy/boring.

any word on the re-birth of backyard football?
i miss Keisha so much.
Carl Jensen · July 24, 2010 - 21:04 EST #107
Yeah I miss Humongous Entertainment. We can appreciate them by playing their games. They put so much time into these priceless games. I loved Backyard Football. But Spy Fox was the bomb. Pajama Sam was fine. Was never into Putt Putt that much though. From Carl Jensen Boy do I miss these games deeply. Oh well. They got sold out.

hey does anybody know how to do the cheat on the 2002 version where you unlock joe montana and walter payton?
Stefan · October 8, 2010 - 06:26 EST #109
I came across this and completely forgot about this game. Backyard football was so fun. I used to play online, I can't remember my name but I tried to play all of the top players to see if I could beat them. I had a decent record but never made the rankings.
Go colts · November 1, 2010 - 23:32 EST #110
2002 or 1999 (original) what do u guys think was better oh and if original is too eayy again the computer just choose players who can't tackle on defense and don't move players on def either it works it makes it exciting cause the wins aren't guarenteed
humgous melonheads · January 4, 2012 - 22:57 EST #111
replayed this game after so many years, it's got a deceivingly good amount of depth, creating plays is great. I love this game. Wish there were more games like this instead of the stuff atari has put out
Barryforever · July 14, 2015 - 00:21 EST #112
