Review: Backyard Baseball 2001

by Mike Shields, mshields@atpm.com

excellent

Developer: Humongous Entertainment

Web: http://www.humongoussports.com

Price: $19.99

Requirements: 132 MHz Power Mac with System 7.5.3 or later, ages 5-12.

Trial: None

The Backyard Kids are back! With the World Series just around the corner—in fact, the interminably long playoffs are probably commencing as you read this—and my favorite team eliminated, it was good to be able to play a game in which I could control the outcome somewhat.

Admittedly, this game is made for elementary school age kids; however, I was having so much fun, my playtesters almost didn’t get a turn, and I almost didn’t get this review in on time!

I started a season, picked my players, and played a game. You can choose from the 30 Backyard Kids as well as 31 of today’s superstars as kids. Naturally, I loaded my team up with superstars, and created one of my own as well.

While other sports simulations require constant manipulation of both mouse and keyboard, everything here is controlled by simple mouse clicks. I especially liked the option of batting practice, as it does take a little getting use to the mechanics of placing the bat to ball.

Of course, we have our commentators from the press box, Sunny Day and Vinny the Gooch calling the play by play.

The Commentators

After picking my team I chose a batting order. The computer tried to do it, but I felt it was better that my pitcher bat ninth instead of sixth.

Picking the Batting Order

So, I started the game. Every once in a while, your pitcher gets to choose from an array of trick pitches. At first, they worked, but I also managed to serve up a gopher ball. As a batter, if you hit the trick pitches, you receive what are called Power Ups. I especially liked the Aluminum Bat, as I was able to throw a couple of tape measure blasts out of Eckman Acres. There’s even a way to steal bases, and you can set your defense. All with the simple click of a mouse.

byb-homerun

OK, I’m dangerously past deadline, but I had fun. Amanda, recently turned 6, could play the game by herself, and sometimes win. Scott, who just turned 4, is also able to play on his own, after sitting on my lap for a game or two. Humongous Entertainment has hit another home run with Backyard Baseball, but for now you’ll have to excuse me; I must get back to the game. It’s the bottom of the fourth, and I’m down by three runs…

It's a good game. I like Pablo Sanchez. And that is my comment.
Shane · July 6, 2001 - 23:48 EST #2
I love the game--especially Kiesha Phillips, Pete Wheeler, and Pablo Sanchez.
anonymous · July 23, 2001 - 22:02 EST #3
Why can't you download this game? Or, if you know, can you please tell me?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · July 23, 2001 - 23:50 EST #4
I didn't write this review, but I suspect the reason you can't download it is the same reason you can't download many commercial games. They're sold on CD-ROM and are simply too large to offer as a download. Do you really want to download several hundred megabytes? Even on broadband, that would take quite a while. You can, however, purchase the game online.
Valerie Larsen · August 1, 2001 - 16:48 EST #5
Can I play Backyard Baseball on the internet?
Mikey · August 1, 2001 - 22:58 EST #6
I hear that Backyard Baseball 2001 is really fun. I wan't to play the game so badly! Can you download Backyard Baseball 2001? If you can please e-mail me.
Laura · August 8, 2001 - 21:57 EST #7
I like Pablo Sanchez, Pete Wheeler and Frank Thomas. Frank is a good picther, Pablo is a good fielder and Pete is a good runner.
anonymous · August 12, 2001 - 16:57 EST #8
I love this game! I like Aluminum power!!
Raymond · August 14, 2001 - 15:53 EST #9
I really want this game. My friend has it and we play it all day. I rock with Palo and Ken Griffy Jr. I always hit home runs with them. Is there a place I can buy it?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · August 14, 2001 - 18:41 EST #10
Raymond, at the top of basically every review, you should find company information and the reviewed item's price. For BYB, that would be $19.99 from http://www.humongoussports.com/ Normally, you can get purchase info (or purchase online) from those sites, but I've just been informed that Humongous Sports doesn't sell it online. So, unless you prefer a local store that carries Mac software or a Mac mail order house, you can get it at Amazon.com. This link will take you straight to the page for BYB.
Jake · August 23, 2001 - 17:13 EST #11
I love Amir Khan.
anonymous · August 25, 2001 - 12:10 EST #12
Backyard Baseball 2001 is a very cool game. Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds are who I like best, especially with Aluminum Power.
Powen Ru · October 2, 2001 - 18:51 EST #13
My son introduced Backyard Baseball to me. I found it is the best computer game I have ever played. I like Pablo, Achmed, Pete, etc. But I really like to assemble a team loaded with underrated players like Luanne, Webber Twin, Jorge, Sally, Gretchen, Kimmy, Marky, and Ricky. It is fun to win a championship without a superstar. I have to use many strategies, of course.
Ty Patterson · November 4, 2001 - 09:47 EST #14
Backyard Baseball is the best computer game I've ever played. The first time I ever played the game was when I went over to my friends' house and we started to play it and it was great. Have fun!!
Paul Sohn · November 9, 2001 - 14:48 EST #15
It's not the BEST game out there, not even close. But this game really amazed me. As a teen who plays things like Counterstrike and Rollercoaster Tycoon, I REALLY was impressed with this game. It's PURE fun!! The gameplay can get a little frustrating, but it's much better than Putt Putt, I think.
anonymous · November 11, 2001 - 19:49 EST #16
I would really love to download this game. If you know how, please tell me.
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · November 12, 2001 - 00:26 EST #17
As far as I know, this game is sold as a box item, not as a download. Humongous Sports' web site does not directly sell it anymore. Their "store" page states that you can buy it from the EB Games web site.
anonymous · November 23, 2001 - 18:42 EST #18
I love to use Pablo and Mr. Clanky.
Steven · November 30, 2001 - 12:47 EST #19
This is the best ballgame since Super Bases Loaded II for the Super NES. When I first recieved the 2001 version, I saw that there had been improvements in gameplay. Also, I saw that the graphic enhancements in Backyard Football had been carried over to this game. However, there's a spelling error. When a team clinches playoff berth, a symbol in the standings next to its name says "CLINCHED PLAYOFF BIRTH", which is incorrect. That's only a minor problem, though. Fans, I bet you can't stand the wait for the next Baseball game, coming Q1 2002.
Shane · February 8, 2002 - 20:13 EST #20
This game is tight. My favorite players are Pablo Sanchez, Pete Wheeler, and Kiesha Phillips.
Lennis Cloud · April 11, 2002 - 17:14 EST #21
How do you become a Backyard Kid?
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · April 12, 2002 - 04:30 EST #22
Well, as far as I know, all those spots are already filled. You can, however, use the create a player feature that I described above and add yourself that way.

anonymous · May 13, 2002 - 18:49 EST #23
When will you make a new Backyard Baseball?
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · May 14, 2002 - 00:38 EST #24
That would be a question better directed to the fine folks at Humongous Sports, a division of Humongous Entertainment, at the above mentioned URL. The company has been since bought by Infogrames, and an e-mail to them stating you'd like a new version might be a good thing.
Andrew Verbockel · May 17, 2002 - 22:57 EST #25
Can you download Backyard Baseball 2001?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · May 20, 2002 - 22:17 EST #26
Andrew - no. See above comments for purchase options.
Bryan J. Findley · May 28, 2002 - 22:48 EST #27
I hear that the Backyeard Baseball game is a lot of fun, but it makes me and all my friends not want to give it a try because the age limit is 6-12. If that isn't true, someone e-mail me and tell me to get the game.
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · May 29, 2002 - 09:34 EST #28
Bryan,
Well, I was 39 when I wrote the review, and I still am, actually :) The game really is fun for all ages, and I play it myself every once in a while. Now, if I can just get a review copy of Backyard Basketball....
Andrew · June 7, 2002 - 16:33 EST #29
This game sucks.
anonymous · June 14, 2002 - 13:35 EST #30
Where do you download this game?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · June 15, 2002 - 00:06 EST #31
pksportz56 - You don't. Check your local computer game stores, or online vendors. I found BYB 2003 just by typing 'backyard baseball' as a search term on Amazon.com
anonymous · June 28, 2002 - 18:40 EST #32
The game is great! When is Backyard Baseball 2002 coming?
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · June 28, 2002 - 23:58 EST #33
Again, a properly placed e-mail can do wonders. I would imagine that the new version for 2002 will come out at the end of the 2002 season, after the new stars emerge and the stats can be compiled. If you scroll up a few answers previous, Lee and I both provide URLs for you to try to find an e-mail address to send a letter of commendation, or recommendation, whatever you'd like to do :)

Good luck!
Jeremy · July 7, 2002 - 15:10 EST #34
Hey. This game kicks butt. How do you get it to work for internet play when you try to register? Please e-mail me if you find out. It rocks.
Mike Shields (ATPM Staff) · July 8, 2002 - 00:36 EST #35
As of the writing of the review, internet play wasn't set up for the Mac version. Looking back, I should've mentioned that in the review, for which I apologize. A well placed email to the proper people would let them know of your interest in internet play for the Mac, if they haven't implemented it already, in the 2002 version.
Shannon Hamilton · July 8, 2002 - 23:07 EST #36
Can you download this game? If I can, please tell me how.
Tim O'Brien · July 8, 2002 - 23:19 EST #37
I am 72 and I still love to get on here and play Backyard Baseball.
Hannah Michell · July 9, 2002 - 19:21 EST #38
Will you put Backyard Baseball 2003 to dowload on this web site when it is available, please?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · July 9, 2002 - 22:02 EST #39
Shannon - no, you can't. (Not legally, anyway.)

Hannah - no, we won't. Sorry, but we only reviewed the product. ATPM is not the developer of this game or of practically anything else you find that we've reviewed. Plus, see above regarding the fact that even the developer doesn't offer it as a download. It's a commercial game that you purchase at your local computer store, or an online computer game vendor.
anonymous · July 19, 2002 - 16:54 EST #40
Ricky Johnson rules!!!!!!
Lil Louie · August 10, 2002 - 20:32 EST #41
I very much enjoy all the Backyard Baseball games. I now own Backyard Baseball 2003 and I wondered if there were any hidden cheats for it that I have not heard about yet. Could you tell me any?
Pablo · August 17, 2002 - 18:37 EST #42
How do you get pictures of Backyard Baseball players?
Scott · August 21, 2002 - 22:10 EST #43
We bought BYB 2003 and my child was upset because you can only play with 1 player. He says that he has played with a 2 player option. Would that be BYB (original) or BYB 2001 or both? He says he wasn't sure what earlier version he was playing.
Jonny Boy · September 6, 2002 - 20:30 EST #44
Hey everyone! I made a group for Backyard Baseball. You can play in tournaments and leagues and everything.
Dude · October 23, 2002 - 10:27 EST #45
This game ROCKS!! Definitely a good choice. If you get it, use Pablo Sanches.
Frank Allocco · November 1, 2002 - 14:00 EST #46
Do any Backyard Baseball games support online play?
Jesse · November 11, 2002 - 18:39 EST #47
I darn near cried my eyes out when I hit my first homer!
Carolos Molina · November 12, 2002 - 08:26 EST #48
How can I play Backyard Baseball?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · November 12, 2002 - 10:15 EST #49
Carolos - I can't get around the fact that the answer to your question is ridiculously simple:

  1. Buy the game (either from your favorite computer game store, or by clicking the link for the game's maker at the top of this page)

  2. Install the game on your computer

  3. Play

Lizzie Niehus · November 12, 2002 - 18:04 EST #50
I think that the best player on that game is Mikey Thomas. Pablo's not far behind. It's my favorite game to play on my computer. It's awesome!
Carson Sestili · November 16, 2002 - 21:28 EST #51
Can I play demos online?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · November 16, 2002 - 21:34 EST #52
Carson - this software developer does have some downloadable demos. Unfortunately, I did not see that Backyard Baseball is one of them.
D-Money · November 23, 2002 - 03:42 EST #53
I love this game. Especially Pablo Sanchez. But what I like to do is create a player and make him good at two main things.
Bri Bloxsom · December 4, 2002 - 19:13 EST #54
This game is very very very awesome! When will the next one come out? What is the cheapest price you can get this game? Please e-mail me the answer.
Calvin · December 6, 2002 - 19:22 EST #55
Kenny Loften ROCKS. So is Barry Bonds, Pablo, Sammy Sosa, and Ken Griffy, Jr.
Daman · December 14, 2002 - 19:50 EST #56
Why can't you download this game from the computer?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · December 27, 2002 - 14:22 EST #57
Daman - because the developer hasn't offered it as a downloadable item. The game is released on CD and you purchase boxed copies either at your local computer software store, or order them online.
Mike Hill · January 2, 2003 - 17:44 EST #58
Is there an online place I can play Backyard Baseball?
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · January 3, 2003 - 01:09 EST #59
Mike - no.
Lennis Cloud · March 30, 2003 - 13:33 EST #60
Is there maybe a certain town where the Backyard Kids are? If there is, let me know.
Lee Bennett (ATPM Staff) · July 1, 2003 - 15:16 EST #61
As a follow-up to the questions about playing BYB online, I found an Infogrames page with the following information:
Important Update!
www.humongous.com and www.humongoussports.com are now part of the Infogrames' kids section of our web site. We will continue to support all games with high quality customer support. However, due to low usage, Backyard Sports online play is no longer available. If you have any questions about our games, please click on the help button to connect to our technical support information.
anonymous · July 8, 2003 - 06:23 EST #62
I have beaten this game once and you get new stadiums when you beat the game. Pablo Sanchez is one of the best power hitters, as well as a very fast runner. Curt Schilling is the best pitcher.
anonymous · July 18, 2003 - 16:11 EST #63
Pablo rules! I need cheats. Does anyone have any secrets?
Stefan · July 21, 2003 - 23:18 EST #64
Why did they get rid of Backyard Baseball and Football online play? This really upsets me. I enjoyed it so much! Do you know if they will ever set up Backyard Sports Online again?
Ryan Nebeker · August 1, 2003 - 15:15 EST #65
I love it. Pablo is the best!
Sarah · October 10, 2003 - 20:23 EST #66
I really love Backyard Baseball. Pablo Sanchez is one of my favorites and the music for him is cool, too!!

Aww, I came to see about the online play and I found out that thay got rid of it. Oh well, at least I know why it doesn't work. : ) Toodles!
anonymous · October 20, 2003 - 10:14 EST #67
This game is awesome for hitting but frustrating for fielding and catching. The computer isn't very smart, either. You can just throw the ball around and someone will eventually drop it and they will run and you can make an easy out.
Big B. · October 31, 2003 - 23:11 EST #68
My favorite stadium to use is Steele Stadium! It's easy to hit home runs in center field! It sucks that you cannot play online anymore. What is your favorite stadium?
Brad · November 5, 2003 - 21:10 EST #69
I think that it is a good game, but it is easy--even for the Game Boy Advance.
anonymous · November 6, 2003 - 22:44 EST #70
How do you play with two players in Backyard Baseball 2003?
anonymous · December 4, 2003 - 18:31 EST #71
Pablo is my favorite character. He is good. Why does Pete run so slow sometimes? He's fast but, by the end of the game, he can't run. Why is that?
Elizabeth Randau · December 18, 2003 - 21:52 EST #72
I love backyard baseball because it's exiting it almost makes me jump out of my seat at school when I make a home run with Mark Maguire. He is my favorite player, you can bet if I don't pick him i have to pick Sammy Sosa.
Lennis Cloud · February 13, 2004 - 11:56 EST #73
Somebody please tell me when is the next time they will be coming out with a new version of backyard football because I really want to be Backyard Kid
big d · April 24, 2004 - 23:33 EST #74
This game is teh best out there. I love it and i can't get enough of it. U need to get this game
Craig · May 8, 2004 - 19:57 EST #75

ryan · May 18, 2004 - 19:53 EST #76
kenny loften is the best he is so fast and he gets lots of doubles and triples i wish they bring back online play i love that. tell me someone if they will put it back on every one would play it then
Jodie Holston · May 23, 2004 - 16:36 EST #77
I think backyard baseball is fun. When I first seen it on TV I knew it was gonna be a hit. (Git It!!!!)
Aaron Brown · July 6, 2004 - 15:41 EST #78
I noticed some people asking why fast runners slow down at the end of games. That is because they are tired. their juice is running low.
Kyle B. · October 19, 2004 - 12:00 EST #79
Pete Wheeler owns as well as PABLO SANCHEZ!!!!
jacob edward golas · January 17, 2005 - 23:44 EST #80
i often compare dmitri petrovich to carl wheezer from the nicktoons series "jimmy neutron." it isn't difficult to figure out why. both of them are tubby and nerdy. both of those dudes also have glasses. if there was a backyard sports game featuring nicktoons characters, i would place carl wheezer on a team with dmitri petrovich in a second.
luke ridge · February 22, 2005 - 18:58 EST #81
hey i love the game i beat the world searies with a awsom team
Joe · March 14, 2005 - 14:39 EST #82
I like Pablo Sanchez, Barry Bond, Sammy Sosa, Kiesha Phillips, and Jorge Garcia, because they good strenght for batting and sometimes they make homeruns. I like Pablo Sanchez, they call him the special weapon and he bats pretty good.
keith susmarski · March 31, 2005 - 10:41 EST #83
hey i think backyard baseball is better than james bond night fire my favorite anocher is berry da jay
Tyler · April 18, 2005 - 18:36 EST #84
This game is sweet. I play it every day and i dont know why its so addicting! how doi sign up for online play? it says that i have to sign up at humongoussports.com but i cant finmd out how there.
ATPM Staff · April 18, 2005 - 20:32 EST #85
Tyler - as has been mentioned numerous times in the comments above, online play was discontinued. That's why you can't find out how to do it.
shedevil · April 23, 2005 - 09:35 EST #86
I love Pablo Sanchez! He's a great character and he's hot. I also like Angela and Achmed and Amir.

i think this game is awsome it has a lot of grate stuff on it
Mark Viviano · May 9, 2005 - 01:33 EST #88
Hey guys, I went to Best Buy and they said they didn't have Backyard Baseball. Is there a website where I can actually download it?
ATPM Staff · May 9, 2005 - 09:33 EST #89
Mark - download? No. Buy online? Yes. Click the link at the top of the review page for Humongous Sports. It redirects to an Atari link which now owns the game.
jacob edward golas · May 19, 2005 - 04:06 EST #90
i really think that it was a wrong move to discontinue online play of backyard baseball. i would really have enjoyed playing it online. i think the people in charge of backyard baseball should reconsider putting backyard baseball back online. i bet there's plenty of demand now for online backyard baseball.
Jon · July 7, 2005 - 12:22 EST #91
Atari needs to fix this online play...online play was amazing because backyard baseball is so easy once you beat it over and over again so you need some hard competition and online play gives you that
Larry · July 8, 2005 - 15:27 EST #92
I agree totally with Jon and Jacob...Online Play needs to return. It was so much fun and never got boring. Backyard Creators please help us get online play back.
Sven · July 10, 2005 - 09:05 EST #93
bring back online play!!
edgar · July 13, 2005 - 11:42 EST #94

Eaton Burke · August 6, 2005 - 15:17 EST #96
I love that game so much
Lorenzo Parker · August 10, 2005 - 23:31 EST #97
The 30 Backyard Kids are back along with the 31 Major League Baseball Pros. Is there a place where I can buy this game? What has been changed is animations, some of the pixels, and fileding animations turned 3D.
ATPM Staff · August 10, 2005 - 23:42 EST #98
Atari now carries this and other games, but I can find no mention of any games that run on the Mac platform. It sadly seems that after Atari acquired the game from Humongous Sports, they abandoned development of the Mac version.
phillip · August 11, 2005 - 11:50 EST #99
You should definatly bring back online play me and my friends would play it more and my friends that dont have it would get it just to play. if online play was still avaliable everyone would be playing the game more.

I want to know where I can buy the plain one from. I love the one that is regular. It has no MLB characters just the Backyard kids. Everytime I buy it someone either stratches it up or break it. Starting now when i get it I am going to be the only person playing. If you all don't know which one im talking about they have stadiums name. Sandy Flats, ummmmm the stadium by the pizza place. The home plate is a pizza box. Another stadium is named after Earnie Steele. If anyone know please help me.

can i use a joytick and play backyard baseball 2005
Tommy May · June 20, 2006 - 21:15 EST #119
You can use a joystick to play, just choose Joystick before you play the game. I am not sure, but I believe you have to use the default controls it gives you... and I think using the mouse is much easier.

This Game is amazing. I have about 15 different teams with a variety of players. I love to be the Mighty Melonheads. During one of my games i was sooo nervous it was the bottom of the 9th inning, to win the world series. I was down by 3 and my secret weapon aka pablo hit a 3 run homer. I didnt know there could be so much power in a little kid LOL. Finally Reese "Big Toe" Worthington hit the winning homerun. I love the game and i hope they make a new one. I wish someday i will become a character. This is kind of embarrasing but ive had a crush on the webber twins eversince ive played the game. Thanxs a bunch,

Halperin Out

This kind of thing happened to me too.In the pottom of the sixth of game 3 of the world series I was loosing 6-3. Pudge Rodriguez got a hit Larry Walker did too. Raul Mondesi came up and hit a 3 run homer to tie it up. After 2 more hits Derek Jeter hit one in the gap and Angela Delvecchio scored the winning run. I was so happy

I've been a big fan of the Backyard Sports series for about 6 years. The older games are cool but ever since they started changing the voices of the kids in Backyard Baseball 2003 and since Atari started to make the games, the series has sucked badly. I do enjoy the games from Backyard Basketball and games before it.
alex johnson · July 19, 2008 - 20:52 EST #147
ever since atari bought humongous, they started to make some of their own characters and taking out some originals. its sad, but backyard baseball 2003 was still made by humongous
The baseball fan · July 21, 2008 - 14:30 EST #148
i have backyard baseball 1999,2001,and 2003 all of them are great because humongous still led production. now they screwed up all of the backyard kids and i heard they took out amir and kenny. i have many atari games but will never buy atari baseball ripoff!!!!!
