My wife's uncle, George Gilbert, went down over Rangoon in one of these. He was probably ill with one of their endless litany of fevers, at the time. He did get a mention in the original script of John Wayne's 'Flying Tigers', although he didn't survive the editors, either.
Uncle George was an Army pilot. His brother John joined the Navy. After George's death, John petitioned and was granted leave to wear George's Army officer's sword to honor his brother, which he did for the remainder of his career - through the 1960's.
